ASRY signs contract for $8.6m desalination plant

January 2, 2012
0

Chairman of ASRY Shaikh Daij Bin Salman Bin Daij Al Khalifa, left with GEMSIL Group Managing Director A. Rajeswaran at signing ceremony.
The Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard Company (ASRY) has achieved yet another milestone by signing a contract with Gemsil Aquatech Services Company, a subsidiary of Gemsil Holdings Co. WLL for setting up a Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (Desalination) Plant at ASRY on build operate and transfer (BOT) basis.

The plant is expected to be commissioned by the end of February this year with an initial production capacity of 3000 MT/day. The estimated cost of the plant is $8.6 million.

GEMSIL is an established name with very good track record in the field of SWRO operations, in addition to its activities in the fields of electrical, mechanical, oil and gas industries, having its business operations in the State of Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and India.

The agreement was signed by the Chairman of ASRY Shaikh Daij Bin Salman Bin Daij Al Khalifa on behalf of ASRY along with CEO Chris Potter, Technical Resources and Business Development General Manager Magdy M. Moustafa and Finance and Accounts Manager Mohammed Abdul Wahab Almansoor while on behalf of GEMSIL the Chairman S. Ramachandran and the Group Managing Director A. Rajeswaran.

The contract signing in ceremony was held at ASRY premises and attended by ASRY’s Production General Manager Martin Hoskins and Projects Realisation Manager Adel E. Boutari as well as the Administration and Business Development Manager P Selva Kumar from GEMSIL.

The plant will be built with the state of the art technology provided by INEXA-Spain, the technical partner of GEMSIL under the supervision of ASRY’s consultant Royal Haskoning UK.

The plant will be capable of meeting an increased demand of sweet water up to 7000 MT/day if required. The agreement between ASRY and Gemsil is for a period of 25 years starting from 2012, where GEMSIL undertakes to meet ASRY’s complete sweet water requirements for its ship repair activities and to cater for all Yard needs including supplying sweet water to its two labour camps.

The new plant is considered one of the major strategic cost saving projects of ASRY and it is also expected to serve the Bahraini community by supplying the excess sweet water to the local market. On completion of the 25 years lease period the plant will be completely taken over by ASRY as agreed between the parties.
