The Minister of Industry and Commerce Dr. Hassan Fakhro in his message on the occasion of Gulf Consumer Day stressed on the importance of a greater consumer awareness.
This year the day was held under title “the best protection starts with you.” In addition to the celebration of global consumer day which marks the fifteenth of March of each year under title: “Our money, our rights: campaigning for real choice in financial services”.
Dr. Fakhro said that the adoption of Gulf States and world countries slogan meant to promote consumer awareness is an evidence of countries interest of consumers and its rights, where the idea of slogan came after studies and statistics proved weakness of consumer awareness.
The Minister added that one of the most important consumer rights adopted by International Organization of Consumer is the right for education which provide an opportunity for consumer to identify shopping mechanisms or origins and how to rationalize consumption in a manner which ensures him to get the best options available and this enhance consciousness of his rights and duties therefore will not easy fall in fraud and manipulation.
Dr. Fakhro said that the Ministry of Industry and Commerce is responsible for consumer awareness of his duties and rights and aware him of various issues related to consumer protection concept through providing a suitable ground needed and guide them and increase their support. He added we have sought to raise awareness among different ages, cultural groups and encourage consumers to demand their rights to help themselves, in collaboration with relevant government ministries or other relevant sides.
Marking the occasion Consumer Protection Directorate makes a number of events through publishing a number of awareness articles in cooperation with various authorities and finally was prepared for radio and television to address this important aspect. The Directorate also distributes bi-monthly leaflet of consumer products prices in the local newspapers to open the way for consumer to choose the appropriate item at the right price.
Through various events of Consumer Protection Directorate aims to raise consumer awareness through delivering message to consumers including action against improper business practices in order to protect them and ensure access of adequate information to help them make the right decisions about goods and services available in the markets.
