Violence erodes peace and stability: FM

March 3, 2013

Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid
Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, said that the dialogue in the Kingdom of Bahrain would not be the last, as the country has undergone years of dialogue by representatives of the people and the government.

He said that it was a continuous process that would result in ideas aimed at political development, adding that there were no disputes on the items on the dialogue table but over the street violence that disrupts the environment among the participants.

The Foreign Minister said that violence was an enemy that harms everyone, stressing that the dialogue was not a negotiation since the aspirations of the people and political development were not up for negotiation.

Shaikh Khalid was speaking in a television interview carried out by Al Jazeera satellite channel that was broadcast tonight.

The Foreign Minister affirmed the existence and the activation of political partnership guaranteed by the Constitution of the Kingdom of Bahrain, pointing out that the recent constitutional amendments had added a lot of power to parliament members, including the ability to reject the government’s programme and to have a say even in the manner of dealing with the government.

On the visits abroad organised by the six societies to Western capitals, the Foreign Minister said that Manama was the closest capital for these societies to achieve their demands and aspired benefits.

He said that the visit of Al Wefaq National Islamic Society to Moscow did not represent pressure on the Kingdom of Bahrain, as was the case of previous visits by Al Wefaq to other Western capitals.

Shaikh Khalid said that Al Wefaq was a society registered in the Kingdom of Bahrain and nobody stopped it from visits abroad, adding in this regard that the efforts exerted by Al Wefaq abroad would be more fruitful if they were carried out among their brothers in the Kingdom and in the National Dialogue.

Commenting on the Bahraini-Iranian relations, the Foreign Minister called on the Islamic Republic of Iran not to interfere in the internal affairs of the Kingdom and of the GCC countries.

He also called on Iran to work on building trust with the GCC, who it shares neighbourly relations with.

“We tell Iran that we are neighbours and countries that share good-neighbourly ties, we hope you do not interfere in our affairs,” said the Foreign Minister.

Shaikh Khalid refuted Iranian allegations of GCC countries training elements to carry out terrorist operations against it.

“We have information that training is being carried out under the supervision of groups in Iran,” he added.

In reference to the Syrian crisis, the Foreign Minister said that the position and efforts of the GCC were integral to the efforts of the Arab League, adding that everyone agrees on the necessity of speeding up an end to the Syrian crisis by guaranteeing stability and the return to safety for the brotherly Syrian people.

Shaikh Khalid affirmed the importance of meeting the aspirations of the people, who by nature refuse not achieving progress, provided that these aspirations are not hijacked or deviate from their natural track.
