GCC needs concerted efforts to surmount challenges

December 10, 2013
0

HRH PM with KUNAHis Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa has highlighted the importance of the 34th Summit of the GCC Supreme Council, which kicks off in Kuwait on Wednesday, constitutes a milestone in GCC march, stressing that it has to establish a new phase of joint GCC action in order to bring about more achievements for GCC citizens in all fields, and be able to face the various challenges facing the region and the world.

In a statement to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), HRH Premier said that the 34th GCC Summit, presided over by the Kuwaiti Amir Shaikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah, will be held amid regional and global changes that require “unconventional methods” to deal with them more effectively.

HRH Premier expressed confidence in GCC leaders’ ability to come up with “fruitful” resolutions and results that boost GCC march, commending the efforts of the Kuwaiti Amir in fostering GCC unity and complementarities.

He added that GCC peoples are looking forward to more resolutions that meet their common aspirations for prosperity and a brighter future.

He said that the global changes make the activation of the call of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdulla bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to move from the cooperation phase to the “Gulf Union” one a “pressing demand now more than ever,” noting that some decisions can be taken in order to turn such an initiative into reality as soon as possible.

He asserted that achieving union among GCC union has been the shared dream of GCC people since the establishment of the GCC in 1981, and, therefore, “it is high time the Gulf Union was founded, without delay.”

He explained that the current level of cooperation among GCC states, especially in the political and economic fields, does not meet the common aspirations of GCC people, but the Gulf Union will certainly do.

He called for the need to focus on “Gulf Union”, which he described as “a safe haven with long-term political and strategic dimension” through which decision-makers in the region, if they endorse it, ensure a comprehensive unity that can ensure a brighter future.

He said that the Kuwait Summit is an opportunity to activate the call of the Saudi Monarch to move from the cooperation phase to a union one so as meet GCC peoples’ demands.

He stressed that now is the right time to establish the Gulf Union, which, he said, is a “win-win” option that would ensure more cohesion and sustainable security and stability in the region.

HRH Premier said that what is targeting Bahrain is targeting other GCC countries, and, therefore, “Union means strength in light of the regional and global situation and developments.”

He called for the need to enhance joint Arab action for the sake of maintaining Arab unity historical identity.

He urged the GCC to reconsider its stances towards a number of issues so as to be able to cope with the on-going regional and international developments.

He said the GCC should adopt a new media discourse that explains the importance the Gulf Union, stressing those GCC countries should develop their cooperation not only in the economic field, but also all levels.

He pointed out that GCC peoples are looking forward to the full establishment of the Gulf Union, the unified currency and central bank, dismissing the effects of some differences in views in impeding the implementation of the economic mechanisms of the union.

He emphasised that all GCC countries, without exception, place the interests of GCC peoples above all others, expressing confidence that all obstacles impeding economic complementarities among GCC states will be removed.

He called upon GCC countries to intensify meetings in order to take the right decisions regarding regional and international events.

He added that peaceful co-existence, mutual respect among countries and commitment to non-interference in each other’s domestic affairs are firm principles that govern international relations, noting that adherence to them in the GCC region will contribute to achieving security and stability.

HRH Premier lauded the distinguished fraternal Bahraini-Kuwaiti relations, praising Kuwait’s contributions to Bahrain’s economic development.

He wished GCC leaders a very successful Summit so as to optimise GCC citizens’ achievements.
