The South Pacific island decides to move west over the international dateline, and its citizens will lose a day of their lives as they jump 24 hours ahead.
The Prime Minister described the decision a much needed step for the sake of businesses as earlier Samoa Island was 21 hours behind Australia and with change in time zone it is 3 hours ahead of Australia.
In the 1892 Samoans had gone through the similar change when the time zone then was aligned with California.
When the clock struck midnight on Thursday, the calendar flipped over to Saturday, switching from the same time zone as the US to that of Asia, New Zealand and Australia.
Samoans are preparing to celebrate the New Year ahead of Australia this year as the prime minister said that the change was much awaited and welcomed by all segments of the society with any opposition.
