“Holding the demonstration at that particular time and place would cause traffic congestion, disrupt security and compromise people’s interests”, Public Security Chief Major-General Taraq Al-Hassan said.
“The rally would pose a threat to road users in these vital and crowded avenues”, he added. Al-Wefaq submitted the requested to the Capital Police Directorate to stage the demonstration on behalf of several political associations.
However, the demand was turned down for security reasons and in conformity with legal rules stipulated in the law on public meetings on the ground that the location is home to vital economic facilities, government establishments serving people and foreign embassies. M. Al-Hassan said that freedom of opinion, demonstrations, and rallies and other liberties and public activities have to be exercised in conformity with the constitution and law provisions.
He pointed out that participation in the unlawful demonstration would contravene the law, adding that legal measures would be taken.
“Holding demonstrations and exercising freedom of expression are all guaranteed in the constitution”, he said, stressing the need not subvert security; break the law, impact economic interests or public facilities.
“The security forces will assume their duties within the framework of the law to stave off any illegal acts, preserve security and stability and protect lives, public and private properties.
