MOIC assures uninterrupted food supply during Ramadan

MANAMA: As the holy month of Ramadan is just around the corner, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce has chalked out a comprehensive plan to ensure the availability of fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, chicken and other eatables across the Kingdom.

The fruits and vegetables suppliers confirmed the increase the frequency of the import of fruits and vegetables to meet demand size which expected to reach more than 200 tons per day from various countries such as Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Africa and others.

This came in line with the implementation the directives of His Royal Highness the Prime Minister to follow up commercial sector preparations for the holy month of Ramadan and to provide citizen’s needs of goods in the markets of the Kingdom. The Minister of Industry and Commerce Zayed R. Alzayani delegated Undersecretary of Commerce Affairs Nader Al Moayyed to chair a meeting with food traders and major hypermarkets officials to review market’s readiness to receive the holy month of Ramadan.

As for major hypermarket, officials confirmed the presence of abundant quantities of food commodities in the stores sufficient for more than three months and prices are stable, in addition that many shops are having promotional campaigns throughout the holy month of Ramadan to suit consumers’ needs and at competitive price.

Bahrain Livestock Company noted that the expected average daily consumption in the holy month is 4,600 head of sheep, while the average daily consumption of meat is expected about 140 head of cattle a day. The stock of live sheep in the barns is about 20000 head of live sheep, and includes a table of cargo arrival of ships loaded with 30000 head of Australian live sheep and expected to arrive on June 10, 2015 followed by another shipment of 30000 head on July 2 and other shipment before Eid al-Fitr with 30000 head of live sheep.

As for Delmon Poultry Company, company’s representative pointed that the maximum slaughterhouse capacity is up to 28 thousand birds a day in addition to chilled imported frozen from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, France and Brazil.

The food stocks monitored by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce shows there are more than 1,800 tons of chilled and frozen chicken which is sufficient for market’s needs for at least two months.

As for Bahrain Flour Mills Company preparations, it supplies the markets with the daily Ramadan products and provides 685 traditional bakeries and 74 automatic bakeries of subsidized flour.
