Hilton Bahrain embarks on Hilton’s Green Ramadan initiative to reduce food waste

Juffair: Hilton Bahrain has announced its participation in Hilton’s Green Ramadan initiative, in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) West Asia, Winnow, and Goumbook.

The hotel is taking proactive steps to minimize food wasteduring the holy month of Ramadan, while also promoting the significance of local sourcing and responsible consumption, the hotel in a statement said.

UNEP West Asia research revealed a significant increase in food waste during religious and social festivities, including Ramadan.

Acknowledging this challenge, Hilton Bahrain is joining Hilton properties across the world implementing proactive measures to address food waste and reduce its environmental impact during this special time. These efforts are in line with Hilton’s Travel with Purpose 2030 Goals, which include a target to reduce food waste sent to landfills by 50 per cent.

Hilton Bahrain has adopted the Winnow system to accurately measure and monitor food waste. This data will facilitate the identification of areas for improvement and enable the hotel to implement effective strategies to reduce waste. By closely monitoring food wastage, Hilton Bahrain aims to make informed decisions that contribute to a more sustainable and efficient food management system.

Also, Hilton Bahrain has partnered with Bahrain Food Bank and a composting company to ensure surplus food is redistributed to those in need, preventing edible food from going to waste. The collaboration with the composting company enables Hilton Bahrain to transform unavoidable food waste into nutrient-rich compost, which will be used to enrich soil and support local agriculture. These initiatives further promote sustainability within the community.

Beyond addressing food waste, Hilton Bahrain is committed to reducing its carbon footprint during Ramadan. The hotel actively promotes responsible consumption and local sourcing practices by partnering with local farmers and fishermen to incorporate locally sourced ingredients into its iftar and ghabga buffets. This approach not only supports the local economy but also reduces the environmental impact associated with long-distance transportation.

“We are proud to be part of Hilton’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. By actively reducing food waste and promoting responsible practices during Ramadan, we aim to inspire our guests and the wider community to adopt more sustainable habits. Through partnerships and collaborations, we are paving the way for a greener future,” Tamer Farouk, General Manager of Hilton Bahrain, said.
