Under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain, a new 1.38 km Repair Quay Wall will be inaugurated at the Yard on 11th December 2011, marking the beginning of celebrations for the company’s 35th year in operation.
A significant milestone for Bahrain’s maritime sector and economy, the inauguration of the Repair Quay Wall represents ASRY’s continued growth in the shiprepair and maintenance industry. Since commencing operations in October 1977, ASRY has continued to grow its repair facilities which now include – in addition to the Repair Quay Wall – one 500,000dwt capacity graving dock, two floating docks capable of accommodating vessels up to 80,000dwt and 120,000dwt respectively, two of the largest slipways in operation in the region and 15 repair berths. All three dry docks and the two slipways are backed-up by a comprehensive array of workshops, which cater to a variety of vessels large and small.
“ASRY was the first shiprepair yard in the Middle East, and since its inception, has established itself as a leader both in the region and internationally. This is a reflection of the overall quality of the yard, its facilities and the skilled personnel available. ASRY’s continued growth and unremitting excellence has solidified its prominence among shipping hubs around the world and the celebration of our 35th year in operation is a great way to thank all those who have supported ASRY over the years.” said ASRY Chairman, Shaikh Daij bin Salman bin Daij Al-Khalifa.
The 35th Anniversary event will be attended by Bahrain’s business leaders and leading international maritime guests from the government and private sectors. Guest speakers will include Chris Hayman, Chairman of the global maritime publications and exhibitions organizer Seatrade, and Abbas Ali Al Naqi, Secretary General of Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC).
“The marine and offshore industry is witnessing one of its busiest periods in recent memory, and demand for high quality products and services are high. Over the last three and half decades, ASRY has developed into one of the world’s largest and most efficient ship repair and conversion yards, and with our recent win at this year’s Lloyd’s List Middle East and Indian Sub-Continent Awards, where we were named ‘Shipyard of the year’, our position within the market has been strengthened further. By expanding our workforce, mobilising all available resources and diversifying our offering to include additional services, ASRY has consolidated its position as an undisputed global leader in the industry. Our upcoming anniversary celebration will allow us to showcase ASRY’s achievements both in the industry and with regards to Bahrain’s economic development,” Chris Potter, Chief Executive Officer, ASRY, said.
Over the decades, ASRY has grown from repairing just Super Tankers in the late 1970s, to a situation today where every conceivable type of commercial vessels can be seen undergoing repairs, especially chemical tankers, gas tankers, dredgers, container ships, bulk carriers and general cargo ships, tugs and offshore support vessels. More recently, the yard has diversified even further into the oil and gas markets for jack-up rig repairs as well as the naval repair sector with its latest development being the establishment of a Joint Venture Company (JVC) in the UK with Centrax, the British power generation packaging specialist to produce multi-application Power Barges – essentially floating electricity generating power stations.
ASRY has, over the years, become one of the world’s leading yards with regards to quality, health, safety and environment, and holds certifications for Quality-ISO 9001 in 2008, Environment-ISO 124001 in 2004, Health and Safety ISO 18001 in 2007, Transit Security-ISO 2700 in 2009, and Port Security-ISO 20858 in 2009, in addition to holding an ISPS Certification.
